Republicans continue to tout the Judeo/Christian foundation of the Constitution and the culture of the United States of America. “Poor” and “poverty” appear 446 times in 384 separate verses in the Holy Bible, not even mentioned once in the Republican Platform. “Social Justice” appears 1,576 times in the Old and New Testament in 1,379 separate verses. Obviously “social justice and caring for the poor” are a very important part of Judeo/Christian values. When was the last time you heard a leader of the Republican Party speak up and defend the rights of the poor? When was the last time you heard a Republican leader defend social justice, voting rights, Women’s rights, LGBT Rights, Immigration, healthcare, war on hunger anything that resembles “social justice”?
As Christians “WE” are asked to be Christ-like, we are asked to use Jesus Christ as an example of how to live. Christianity is more than just being a straight hetero-sexual, way more than that. As a matter of fact you would be hard pressed to find the Verse and Scripture where Jesus Christ says, all you need to do is be a hetero-sexual to be a Christian. The Republican Party has re-defined “Christianity” to mean something that does not resemble “Christianity”. To be a good Christian according to Republicans all you need to do is be anti-gay and anti-abortion and say I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and be straight. That would be a no!!!! Here are some Bible Scriptures to enlighten the masses of wanna-be Christians that should give you pause as you demonize the poor, sick, immigrant and disenfranchised:
Isaiah 1:17 “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”
Proverbs 31:9 “Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Ezekiel 16:49 “Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.”
Matthew 19:21 “Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Proverbs 22:16 “Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.”
Deuteronomy 15:7-11 “If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, you shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.”
Proverbs 14:31 “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.”
Proverbs 29:7 “A righteous man knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man does not understand such knowledge.”
James 5:1-5 “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.”
Isaiah 10:1-2 “Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!”
James 2:1-7 “My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?”
Jeremiah 22:16 “He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?” declares the LORD.”
Galatians 6:2 “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
As Republicans in the House of Representative debate cuts to Food Stamps, defunding Obamacare’s and declining Medicaid expansion showing indifference to the poor; each and everyone one of them that “CLAIMS” to be a Christian should review these passages. The Holy Bible is clear, caring for the poor is a priority to the Lord. Using racist justification for cutting food assistance to the poor (SNAP Program) is not Christian!
But more importantly, atheists, agnostics, progressives, liberals, Democrats, Independents and all Americans alike should hold the Republicans who claim to be the Party of Christian values accountable and do it vociferously, demand it righteously! Scripture is on your side!
